In the age of social media we have unprecendented access to all sorts of ideas, information, people. Back in the day, folks reporting the news were unreachable and, generally, believed. I have long been suspecious of mainstream media which was cemented when I saw the reporting on the Depp v Heard trial. In an effort to not taint the jury pool, Judge Penny Azcarate sealed most documents, which I wholeheartedly agreed with. While practices like this probably drives journalists nuts, those in the judicial community have little choice - mpartiality is imperative. And it should be in those that report the news, too.
I was introduced to NewsNation during the Gabby Petito murder investigation and really appreciated their coverage. Watching Ashleigh Banfield spar with Steven Bertalino (family lawyer for the Laundrie family) was incredibly satisfying. However, her recent activities regarding Anne Taylor, the public defense attorney for Brian Kohberger, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Does this mean my own biases influence my entertainment? Absolutely. However, I do trust my own judgement, for the most part. I've also learned that defense attorneys are a vital part of our judical system. And many get a bad rap due to the nature of their job. So knock it off, Ashleigh, please.
For those interested in the so-called "conflicts of interest" regarding Anne Taylor, I suggest Natalielawyerchick and Andrea Burkhart - both of whom are US criminal defense attorneys. Both of whom have or are working as public defenders. While Natalie is based in Maryland, Andrea works in the state of Washington so she has particular knowledge that is quite relevant to this situation. There are not only legal specifities that the lay public may be unaware of, there are also practical concerns that Andrea outlines beautifully.
At this point, the whole world wants justice for the four college students' deaths but we should want it done in the right way. Idaho is keenly aware that they are center stage so I'm pretty sure that they're doing all they can to insure justice. How about we let them do that without all this fuss & bother? At the end of the day, that's what they're gonna do anyway. If you really need some salacious fodder, maybe check out Emily D. Baker's latest podcast about the psychic Tik-Toker's lawsuit - it is WILD!
