When Nola Lola, Jolene and I left Popcorned Planet in Feb of 2022 one of the first people to reach out was a YouTuber named Halogen Helix (aka Paul). I was expressing my anger and dismay on X when he DMed me to ask if I was okay. Normally I would ignore unsolicited DMs but for some reason I responded to this particular one and I'm so very glad I did. I would later find out that this man was a former coshost of Andy Signore's, a former fan who Andy twisted & molded into what I perceive to be some sort of "enforcer."
I was a fan of Detroit Redwings ice hockey for many years and the definition seems to fit what Paul's role became to a T:
Enforcer (ice hockey)
Enforcer is an unofficial role in ice hockey. The term is sometimes used synonymously with "fighter", "tough guy", or "goon". An enforcer's job is to deter and respond to dirty or violent play by the opposition. When such play occurs, the enforcer is expected to respond aggressively, by fighting or checking the offender. Enforcers are expected to react particularly harshly to violence against star players or goalies.
Andy Signore started Popcorned Planet (PCP) after he was kicked out of a sort of Hollywood adjacent career via a channel known as Screen Junkies. He was booted due to his indescrections with fans which came out in the beginning of the #MeToo movement. He was the second person to be accused after Harvey Weinstien.
Movie discussions where Andy's bread and butter so that's what PCP began as. First he had to have his redemption arc where he proved that one woman out of 9 accusers, whose allegations where the most henious, had a consensual affair with him (in the beginning, anyway). Hindsight being 20-20 the giant holes in his explanation are evident but he made it work.
Andy doesn't like appearing on screen alone and he was looking for subscribers so he found Jody's Corner whose sub count was much larger than his back then. Paul knew movies, as well as YouTube, and was already a fan. I'm unsure of when Luis of Nerd Report (who also knew movies) and "that British cow" came along. There are others who Paul mentions in his videos but I'm unfamiliar with them so their names didn't stick with me. I do know that Andy treats people like tissues and tosses them after thorougly using them.
What Andy did to Paul, though, was particularly depraved, IMO. Any perceived "enemy" of Andy's was thoroughly roasted via Paul. Rather than use his own platform, Andy had Paul spy and create nasty videos. Today Luis and Andy's head mod, Will, are the spies (amongst others, I'm sure). Andy grooms his community to let him know when folks are speaking badly about him.
Mine, Lola's & Joleen's leaving were a direct consequence of such tattling. A woman named Robin Redbreast shared discussions from a private chat with Andy and his cohorts. But that was nothing even remotely as bad as what Paul endured. The more deeply embedded one is in his community the worse the gaslighting is. The more twisted, folded and mutulated you get. IMO
Andy is easily able to foster loyalty. It's part of what makes him so successful as a YouTuber. I read a comment from a follower stating how they trust him completely even though they've never met him. Such sentiments are dangerous when dealing with a person like Andy. And this is precisely why I will continue to speak out.
