Day 17 of Commonwealth v Karen Read mirrors every day thus far: We still have no idea how Officer John O'Keefe was killed. Or even that he actually was murdered. No lead investigator to walk us through all the steps of said investigation. No medical examiner to describe his injuries and tell us the cause and manner of death. No autormobile expert to decipher black box and/or infotainment data.
Alan Jackson's cross of Jen McCabe didn't bring any clarity in just how O'Keefe died except for Jen's insistance that Karen erratically and frantically screamed, "I hit him, I hit him, I hit him!" Yet this exact phrasing does not appear in any of the few reports written nor in either grand jury testimony. Odd, right? Or maybe that's just me.
Jen's "little circle" sat in "shock & horror" at Brian & Nicole Albert's house once they were woken up and/or called. Unless there were "butt dials" that nobody remembers, even though a fair number (maybe all) were deleted. Jen especially seems fond of deleting things from her phone before she "willingly handed it over." Some of these deletions were even sanctioned by law enforcement, according to her. She disputes the idea that one of those deletions was a 2:27 am search for, "hos long to die in cold." I guess Cellebrite, a tool that is used by, "federal, state, and local law enforcement as well as enterprise companies and service providers to collect, review, analyze and manage digital data," isn't nearly as reliable as everybody thinks it is. Maybe one day we'll get some actual experts in this trial to prove or disprove this. If the CW of MA poves that Cellebrite stinks I forsee a watershed of former convictions being questioned.
In spite of all of this, Jen assures us that she is always truthful and honest. If you have to tell people then you probably aren't, IMO. She and her husband mention a Jeep with a plow that the homeowners, Brian & Nicole, testified about. In between there were a few young people who claim there was no Jeep parked in front of 34 Fairview that night. I'm not sure why this is so important but it's rather interesting. Was it there or not? We may never know for sure, just like much of this situation.
As the trial progresses, I become more sure that Karen Read's claims that nobody actually investigated what happened to Officer John O'Keefe are true. It feels more like a bunch of ass covering by inept, or worse, corrupt, law enforcement. This idea is reinforced by the next witnes, Brian Higgans, on day 18. Brian is the one that was playing "grab ass" (according to Matt McCabe) at the Waterfall bar that night with the other Brian, whose last name is Albert. The two are great friends although Higgans has almost never been in Albert's house. The two seem to enjoy short butt dial chats in the middle of the night. At least Higgans keeps his phone on the bedside table, where it belongs. Although I'm unsure how his butt reached that far.
Higgans likes to drink Jameson Irish whisky & gingerale, nothing else will suffice. And he's perfectly fine driving after a half dozen of said beverages, even if it's to go to the cop shop to move cars around. Becuase that's what one does at 1:30 am when a blizzard is forecast. After being called to an impromptu meeting at his buddy, Brian Albert's house, for a meeting that fateful meeting, he spent the rest of the day at the Canton Police Department. His route as he wandered around seemed to enter the sally port a lot. He likes to cut through there like he does local army bases to dump his old phones and sim cards.
No need to worry because Higgans took screen shots of a 2 week text thread with Karen Read and extracted those he'd exchanged with John O'Keefe before he destroyed said phone. Phew! It's a good thing the ATF has such a stellar guy on staff, even if he's been relegated to desk duty. I'm guessing he wasn't able to retire early with full pension like his buddy, Brian Albert, poor guy. We sat through a good hour or two of Higgans awkwardly reading awkward texts between him and Karen Read. What this was supposed to prove, I'm not sure. Like much of this case. I do know that if those two were in my rear view, I might've been tempted to back into them. Especially when Higgans refused to acknowledge that Read ghosted him about a week before O'Keefe died. I'm actually a boomer and even I know that she absolutely ghosted him.
On X (formerly known as Twitter) I posted a still of the video of the Waterfall that night wondering who decided that these two bufforns were prime candidates for badges and guns. I got a comment that asked me what the problem was. I'm not sure if they were being sarchastic or not. That seems to be the primary feeling for this whole trial. It can be summed up thus: Seriously? WTAF?
